Canadian Xiangqi Championships

The Canadian Xiangqi Championships is a bi-annual event that was first organized by Vancouver Chinese Chess Association in 1987. It was originally just a team competition between Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Since 1989, the individual event was introduced as well. In 1991, with the participation from Montreal and Winnipeg, this event has become the National Xiangqi Championships of Canada. Also since 1991, a Chinese Xiangqi Team with Grand Master(s) is invited each time as the honorary guests to visit various cities in North America to help promoting Xiangqi. Unfortunately, this special Chinese Team visit was stopped with the Canadian Embassy in Beijing rejected the Chinese Team visa applications three times in a row since 2000.

The team event is based on the result of a round robin match between all participated cities. Each team is consisted of 3 players and with the top board represented by the champion of each city for that year. The individual event is based on the result of the top board. According to the regulation by the Organization Committee, any city that could win the Team Champion three times will be honoured the Team Trophy permanently.

In 1998, Toronto finally won its 3rd team title and was honoured the Team Trophy permanently. A new Team Trophy was acquired in 2000.  In 2002, Toronto claimed its first individual Champion and Huang Yuying became the first Canadian Woman Champion.
